On May 17, the newspaper Kommersant reported that the commander of the Combined Group of Russian Forces in Chechnya, Colonel General Vladimir Moltenskoi, had stated that, as early as June of this year, the payment of “combat wages” will be halted to personnel of the Ministry of Defense. “Now, evidently, in the Ministry of Defense they have concluded that even without ‘combat wages’ the soldiers in Chechnya receive enough pay.”
Officials of the city of Moscow have ordered the Andrei Sakharov Museum to take down a panel on the side of its building which reads: “War has Been Going on in Chechnya Since 1994. Enough!” The museum is being threatened with a massive fine of 45,000 rubles (Kolokol.ru, May 21).
