Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 216

Incumbent president Mircea Snegur will face parliament chairman Petru Lucinschi in the December 1 runoff of Moldova’s presidential election, officials told the Monitor. In yesterday’s first round, nearly complete returns show Snegur with 39 percent of the vote, Lucinschi with 28 percent, Communist candidate Vladimir Voronin with 10 percent, Prime Minister Andrei Sangheli and pro-Romanian candidate Valeriu Matei with 9 percent each, and several minor candidates with smaller percentages. Lucinschi looks better placed than Snegur to win over most of the supporters of the candidates defeated in the first round. (Telephone conversation with the Monitor corespondent, November 18)
