Armenia’s National Security Ministryannounced August 4 that 14 individuals arrested since July 28,mostly members of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaksutyun)and led by Vahan Hovanessian, one of its leaders, were allegedlyplanning to assassinate Defense Minister Vazgen Sarkisyan, touse terrorist methods to create chaos in the country, and go onfrom there to seize power. The arrests represent the latest escalatorystep in the government’s campaign of intimidation against theopposition. Another Dashnak Bureau member, Ruben Hovsepian, howevertold Radio Liberty August 2 as cited by Armenian agencies August4 and 5 that should his party resort to terrorism, it would takeresponsibility for it.
