During the last week seven members of the Russian Ground Forces committed suicide, according to a Defense Ministry report. Another 5 service personnel were murdered and 8 died in accidents. (Nezavisimaya gazeta, August 19) Last week, the Russian "Mother’s Rights" group announced to the press that some 5,000 Russian servicemen die annually as the result of hazing. The group also said that the incidence of violent deaths in the armed forces is rising rather than falling, and called for passage of a law on alternative service as one possible remedy.
