Publication: Monitor Volume: 1 Issue: 20
After being praised by Yeltsin as thecountry’s best mayor, Moscow’s Yuri Luzhkov has come under fire for financial improprieties and misuse of office. Moskovsky Komsomolets reported May 25 that he was under pressure to resign. But Moscow radio said he would not quit, noting that both Boris Yeltsin and public confidence in the Russian government would suffer if Luzhkov were forced out. Meanwhile, Luzhkov asked Yeltsin for an additional 300 billion rubles for the city’s interior ministry forces, Russian television reported May 25. Earlier Yeltsin’s criticism of Luzhkov’s handling of these forces had been a major source of contention between the two.
