Some 500 specialRussian police commandos raised the headquarters of a Moscow gang,arrested 23, and seized a large supply of weapons, Russian radioreported August 24. The police said that there were several Chechensand a Georgian criminal kingpin among those arrested. The raidcame a day after Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov had sharply criticizedthe local police for incompetence in fighting crime. He complainedto the Russian media that the Moscow government had given thepolice "unprecedented financial aid" that had allowedthe Moscow militiamen to be equipped at "the level of theNew York police and the police had still not shown any results.
