Knuckling under toRussian pressure, the Lithuanian government directed the city of Kaunas toclose the Chechen Information Center that had opened there May 15, BNSreported May 18. Opposition leader Vytautas Landsbergis sharply criticizedMoscow for its efforts to close the center, pointing out that Russia’sobjections to the spread of information “shows where the actual system ofthat country is going.”

Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry sent a protest to Warsaw inreaction to the announcement of a new Radio Free Caucasus in Cracow. PolishPresident Lech Walesa said that Warsaw would not allow the station to open,Radio Liberty reported May 18. In Moscow, Duma chairman Ivan Rybkin saidthat Polish interest in establishing such a station was “a direct assault onRussian interests.”
