Russian foreign minister Andrei Kozyrev said yesterday that Spanish foreign minister Javier Solana, now the leading candidate for the post of NATO Secretary General, "would prove a boon in deepening NATO-Russian relations." He is "one of the best candidates from the point of view of Russia’s interest in partnership with the alliance…Solana is a good friend we have known for many years. Solana has both voiced and proved his warm, friendly, and partner-like attitude to Russia." (1)
