NATO CHIEF: MOSCOW STILL THINKING IN COLD WAR TERMS.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 62

The Secretary General of NATO, Javier Solana, said in an interview in Madrid today that Russia’s idea of NATO was rooted in the Cold War years of the 1950s. He advised Russia to wake up to the reality of the 1990s and realize that the alliance was no longer its enemy, saying NATO was now a different kind of alliance and wanted the closest possible relationship with the Russian Federation. Solana conceded, however, that Russia was unlikely to think "calmly" about NATO before the June presidential election. (Reuter, March 29)
