NATO PUTS EXPANSION ON HOLD.

NATO has agreed to stall it plans to expand the alliance into central and eastern Europe in an attempt to buy time to win Russian consent. Alliance diplomatic sources say that NATO is anxious to build a special relationship with Moscow, and will put the issue "on the backburner" until after presidential elections in Russia and the United States next year.
