Yegor Gaidar, leader of RussiaÕs Democratic Choice, met yesterday with the governor of Nizhny Novgorod region, Boris Nemtsov, but admitted afterwards that he had failed to persuade Nemtsov to run for president. Gaidar said he still hoped Nemtsov would change his mind. Otherwise, RussiaÕs Democratic Choice would have to choose between Boris Yeltsin and Grigory Yavlinsky, both of whom, Gaidar said, are "weak and vulnerable" compared with the Communist candidate, Gennady Zyuganov.
