In a development with enormous implications for the Chechen conflict and the fate of Chechen internally displaced persons, retired FSB General Murat Zyazikov was announced as the winner of Ingushetia’s presidential election, held on April 28. Zyazikov was reported to have received 52 percent of the vote. His opponent, Alikhan Amirkhanov, was said to have received 44 percent (Strana.ru, April 29). The website Grani.ru compared Zyazikov’s apparently completely rigged victory to that of President Alyaksandr Lukashenka in Belarus last September (Grani.ru, April 29).
