Membersof the old party-state nomenklatura who unlike many of their colleaguesfailed to profit during the early stages of privatization nowwant to use the upcoming elections to regain power, Kurantyreported August 16. One fifth of the largest enterprises thatwere privatized in the past now belong to their previous red directors,but those who failed to win in the past now hope to return topower by backing the communists and agrarians, the paper said.But it noted that "a restoration of the nomenklatura wouldnot mean a return to the Soviet system." The habits andexpectations of its members have changed over the past decade:now, the nomenklatura members simply want to have access to propertyand power.
