A North Korean armed with a pistol broke into the Russian embassy compound in Pyongyang yesterday, killing three North Korean guards and wounding several others. No Russians were injured. The Russian Foreign Ministry later reported that the intruder, identified as a 25-year-old security guard of the North Korean state security service who sought asylum in Russia, had committed suicide. However, earlier reports from the Russian Itar-Tass news agency indicated that the gunman may have been killed by the North Korean security service in an operation mounted with the cooperation of the Russian embassy.
