Following last week’s visit ofthe Russian defense minister to Beijing, and the upcoming visit of theChinese premier to Moscow, the Russian government has moved to expandties with China and other Asian states. Russian interior ministerViktor Yarin visited the Chinese capital May 29-30 to arrange closercooperation with Beijing in the struggle against internationalorganized crime, Xinhua reported May 30. Meanwhile, Russian gasexporters are considering building a gas pipeline from Siberia toChina, Kommersant-Daily reported May 30. And Russia renewed itscommitment with China, North Korea, South Korea, and Mongolia to builda huge new Pacific port in the Tumen delta.
