RUSSIAN MARINES IN MOSCOW PARADE FOUGHT IN CHECHNYA.

Col. Gen. IvanSkuratov, the commander of Russian marines, said that more than 50 units fromthe Northern and Baltic fleets had taken part in the Chechen fighting,Krasnaya zvezda reported May 17. The general said these units had now beenwithdrawn from the North Caucasus but there was still one marine unit fromthe Pacific fleet there. Several marine units from the Baltic fleetparticipated in the Moscow V-E Day parade that President Clinton attended.At the time, Russian officials reassured Western diplomats that these marineshad been in Chechnya but had not fought there. Skuratov’s comments make itclear that the marine units in the parade had indeed participated actively inthe fighting.
