RUSSIAN-OWNED AIRCRAFT CRASHES IN AFRICA, KILLING HUNDREDS.

A Russian-built cargo plane crashed January 8 just after taking off from Ndolo airport in Kinshasa, Zaire. The plane plowed into a crowded downtown market place, killing at least 200 people. Four Russian crew members who survived the crash with minor injuries were reportedly taken into custody by local authorities after angry onlookers attempted to lynch them. Two other crew members are being sought by police. (3) In Moscow, a spokesman for the Russian Ministry of Transportation said that all flights of the Russian company Moscow Airlines had been suspended for safety violations in the wake of the accident. Russian sources indicated that the plane had been leased by Moscow Airlines to a Zairian company. (4)
