Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 237

In 1996, foreign investments in the Russian space industry accounted for nearly 40 percent of all funds invested, and the general director of the Russian Space Agency, Yuri Koptev, said he expected $600 million in foreign money next year. He said that the industry would need 5.1 trillion rubles ($935 million) from the state just to operate at a "subsistence level." Without this support Russia would not be able to participate in international space projects. (Interfax, December 18)
