Marines from Russia’s BlackSea Fleet have gone ashore in western Georgia to participate ina joint operation with Georgian forces, NTV reported June 25.The combined military force will patrol the region to preventany Chechens from entering the area. This is the second such landingby Russian marine forces in Poti; the first took place in 1993when the marines were used to protect Georgian president EduardShevardnadze against attempts by Chechen-supported and overthrownGeorgian president Zviad Gamsakhurdia. Meanwhile, and in anothershow of support to Tbilisi, Moscow has agreed to reschedule Georgia’sdebt to Russia; for the next three years, the Georgian authoritieswill pay only the interest due.
