A recent poll has found that more than half of Russians livingin Moscow are indifferent to the problems of ethnic Russians livingin non-Russian portions of the former Soviet Union, RespublikaSakha reported June 10. The existence of such attitudes bothlimit the ability of the Russian government to exploit the issueof Russians abroad to generate domestic support and mean thatethnic Russians living abroad or in non-Russian regions withinthe Russian Federation may decide that they will have to cometo terms with the new reality rather than counting on Moscow totake them under its wing.
