First Deputy Minister of Shariah State Security Shamsudi Uvaisaev and former Foreign Minister Ruslan Chimaev, who served under Chechnya’s first President, Djohar Dudaev, were shot dead during a robbery at Uvaisaev’s home in a mountainous region of Chechnya on May 15. (RTR, Itar-Tass, May 16) Two bodyguards also were killed. Chechnya’s deputy prime minister, Kazbek Makhashev, said the motive was robbery and the killings were not politically motivated.
