Two gunmen in Tbilisi killed the chairman of the Fund for the Revival of Democracy, Shaliko Khabioshvili, June 20, Russian radio reported June 21. Khabioshvili was a close friend and supporter of Georgian president Eduard Shevardnadze. He had been a secretary of the Georgian Communist party when Shevardnadze was its leader. In 1985, Khabioshvili was sentenced to 15 years in prison for corruption, but he was released in 1990 and became chairman of the fund that Shevardnadze had created. Georgian officials told the Russian station that his murder was linked to the misuse of some $10 million belonging to the fund.
