SOLANA VISIT TO BALTIC STATES INCONCLUSIVE.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 77

On a maiden tour of post-Communist Central and Eastern Europe, NATO’s new secretary-general Javier Solana visited Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania April 16-18 and conferred with the three countries’ presidents and their governmental and parliamentary leaders. Solana did not provide conclusive answers to the leaders’ urgent pleas for reassurance regarding the Baltic states’ eligibility for admission to NATO and an admission timetable. Solana praised the Baltic states’ participation in the NATO-led peacekeeping operation in Bosnia and in the Partnership for Peace program. (BNS, April 16-18)
