Gatherings in Vilnius and Kaunas commemorated October 16 what the participants termed the "Soviet genocide" in neighboring East Prussia, begun by the Red Army on October 16, 1944. Under secret orders from Stalin uncovered in recent years, the local German population was wiped out, and many Lithuanians were also caught up in the massacre. (19)
