Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 180

. Today’s issue of the Communist newspaper Pravda publishes a page-long list of the books that Soviet dictator Josef Stalin ordered from libraries in 1926. (AP, September 27) The titles include "Is Resurrection Possible?" "Jewish Ritual Murders," "Essence of Hypnosis," "Souls of Humans and Animals," "The Right to Kill," "Hooliganism and Knifing," "How to Cope with Your Nerves," and "Syphilis." Pravda said the list, which a reporter found in state archives, was evidence of Stalin’s high intellect. "A man is known by the books he reads," the newspaper commented. Quite so.
