Former deputy mayor of Moscow Sergei Stankevich, currently detained in Poland while Russia seeks his extradition on corruption charges, has offered to return to Russia voluntarily as long as he is allowed to await trial at home. Stankevich says he fears for his life if he is held in one of Russia’s notoriously brutal pre-trial detention centers. (Itar-Tass, May 13) Human rights activists have long said that the conditions facing those awaiting trial in Russia are even less humane than those of convicted felons.
