Belarusianpresident Aleksandr Lukashenko said that striking drivers at theMinsk subway were trying to undermine his government and enjoyedthe support of Poland’s Solidarity movement, Russian and Belarusianmedia reported August 21. He ordered the interior ministry tobegin criminal proceedings against the leaders of the strike andsent in strikebreakers and police to operate the lines. The drivershad gone on strike seeking to recover back wages that have notbeen paid since June.
