Tajik opposition leaders said July 7 that all future peacetalks should take place in Central Asia because that region ismore interested in a settlement than anyone else, Russian radioreported July 7. One reason for the Central Asian interest isthe growing tide of refugees from the Tajik fighting–which continuedover the weekend. There are now some 42,000 Tajik refugees inKazakhstan alone. The same day, Interfax reported that Dushanbeand Moscow’s regional authorities had signed a trade pact callingfor Tajikistan to ship 30,000 tons of cotton to Moscow in exchangefor steel products and other equipment.
