The moneylaundering investigation revealed last month by The New York Times has provoked a flood of articles in the Western press about capital flight from Russia. The Financial Times, citing “specialists,” estimates capital flight at $140 billion over 1994-1998 and currently at $15 billion a year. The Washington Post estimates $150 billion since 1992 and a current rate of $1 billion-$2 billion per month. Jamestown’s Weekly Monitor published an estimate of $2 billion per month in June 1997.
