TOKYO HARDLINES KURIL ISLANDS PROPOSAL.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 187

Japan’s cabinet remains opposed to giving economic assistance to Russia or to any third country for the purpose of developing the "illegally occupied" Kuril Islands, a Japanese Foreign Ministry official said yesterday. Tokyo will also oppose any action that would imply recognition of Russia’s administrative rights on the islands, he said. The official’s remarks followed a Russian Foreign Ministry statement suggesting that Tokyo was considering Moscow’s proposals for joint economic activities on the disputed islands.
