All signson June 26 pointed to a resolution of the conflict between theDuma and the Russian government before the July 1 vote of confidence.On that date, a special Duma commission which includes representativesof all political groups met to consider the situation, and Yeltsinhimself reiterated his willingness to compromise, Ostankino televisionreported. Yeltsin met with Democratic Choice leader Yegor Gaidar,who said that his party would continue to support the government.And in an indication that the July 1 confidence vote may not eventake place, Supreme Court judge Ernest Ametistov said that PrimeMinister Viktor Chernomyrdin can withdraw his request to havea vote of confidence, a step which various Moscow commentatorssuggested would allow the government both to save itself and totame the parliament.
