In Tiraspol September 1 through 4, celebrations marking the fifth anniversary of Transdniester’s secession from Moldova were attended by a group of ultranationalist and communist deputies from Russia’s Duma, Basapress and Flux reported. "Transdniester is Russia’s future," Russian Popular Union leader Sergei Baburin exclaimed to the anniversary rally. Transdniester president Igor Smirnov and other leaders reaffirmed their support for "Soviet power" and for the restoration of the former USSR. Units of the Transdniester army and of the Russian operational group participated together in the festivities, while Russian commander Lt. General Valerii Yevnevich shared the rostrum with the Transdniester leaders as they addressed the crowd.
