TRANSPORT OF SPENT NUCLEAR FUEL RESUMES.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 136

After a two-year hiatus, the removal of spent nuclear fuel from submarines in Russia’s Pacific Fleet has been resumed, a Russian official said yesterday. A special train carrying what the official described as highly durable containers has arrived in the Far East and will begin transporting the fuel from Vladivostok to the distant Mayak processing plant in the city of Chelyabinsk. Experts there suggest that the removal of all the fleet’s spent fuel could take up to ten years. (Itar-Tass, July 10)
