U.S. SUSPECTS RUSSIAN NUCLEAR TEST.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 49

Pentagon officials revealed yesterday their suspicions that Russia may have conducted a clandestine test of a small nuclear device in January at the Novaya Zemlya test site in the Russian Far North. U.S. defense secretary William Perry corroborated the report during testimony before Congress, but warned that the ambiguity of the evidence made it impossible to reach a firm conclusion on what had occurred. He recommended continuing discussion at a closed session. (UPI, March 7)
