UKRAINE TAKING CHARGE OF CRIMEAN TATAR ISSUE.

Ukrainiandeputy prime minister Vasyl Durdinets told Interfax-Ukraine August15 that he has been given a mandate to oversee Crimea’s securitysituation, and to assist regional authorities in implementingUkrainian government decisions, with particular reference to theCrimean Tatars. Last month five Tatars were killed in the courseof riots against mafia-type organizations, and Tatar leaders reneweddemands for greater help from Kiev in ensuring their securityand repatriating more of their compatriots to Crimea. Durdinets,an internal security specialist, said that Kiev is ready to helpCrimean police improve their performance, and that the August10 meeting of the Ukrainian cabinet allocated 2 trillion karbovantsyto finance the repatriation of Crimean Tatars from the placesof their deportation under Stalin.
