UKRAINIAN CHURCHES SIGN AGREEMENT ON COEXISTENCE.

The heads of eight religious denominations in Ukraine, meeting at the presidential palace in the presence of Leonid Kuchma, have signed a memorandum on mutual relations. The document provides for mutual renunciation of "forceful actions" or pressures in interdenominational disputes over church buildings and other property. It also abjures attempts by the churches to involve the state authorities in such disputes. Signatories include the three rival Orthodox Churches (Moscow Patriarchate, Kyiv Patriarchate, and Autocephalous); the Uniate (Eastern Catholic) and Roman Catholic Churches; and the main Protestant-evangelical denominations. The memorandum is open for signing by other denominations.
