The number of unemployed in Russia has reached 5.8 million, which constitutes 7.9 percent of the country’s labor force of 73 million people. According to the State Committee for Statistics, this figure will shortly increase to six million. A national unemployment rate of 10 percent is considered to pose the risk of social unrest. According to the Committee’s data, several regions of Russia including Yaroslavl, Pskov, Kostroma, Kirov, and the Udmurt and Khakassia autonomous republics are approaching the 10 percent unemployment threshold.
