Russian Akula and Oscar-2 submarines have shadowed US Trident missile submarines and aircraft carriers off the east and west coasts of the United States in recent months in a surprising surge of activity far from home, the US Navy said on Friday. It was the first flurry of Russian submarine activity near the United States since 1987. Navy officials said the move far from the frigid northern Pacific waters where those subs normally operate showed Moscow was not ready to concede a continuing but shrinking US lead in undersea warfare.
