Intense fighting continued throughout thefoothills in southern Chechnya May 22, Itar-Tass reported. The Russiansattacked the key town of Serzhen-Yurt, but the Chechens repulsed theirattacks. In Chechnya, the special mission of the Organization for Securityand Cooperation in Europe announced that Russian and Chechen representativeswould meet May 25 to discuss ending the conflict. According to Itar-Tass,Chechen president Dzhokhar Dudayev has been working on a peace plan, but thenews service gave no details.

Meanwhile, no new information was reported about the fate of FredCuny, the American aid worker who has been missing in the region since April9, although the US State Department said that Washington had accepted Russianreports that the body found by the Chechens last week was not that of Cuny.
