WASHINGTON OFFERS GOOD OFFICES IN CASPIAN DELIMITATION DISPUTE.
Publication: Monitor Volume: 3 Issue: 208
U.S. officials are encouraging Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan to settle a dispute over ownership of three Caspian oilfields through negotiations, and are offering to mediate such negotiations, according to reports from Baku and Washington yesterday. The dispute concerns the Kapaz/Serdar, Azeri, and Chirag oilfields, controlled by Azerbaijan but claimed wholly or in part by Turkmenistan. (Turan, November 5) Azeri and Chirag are included in Azerbaijan’s "deal of the century" contract. Significantly, both countries base their case on the sectoral division principle.
