WORLD WAR II SOVIET SPY RING.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 48

Decoded fragments of raw intelligence from the World War II era, declassified March 5, suggest that the Soviet Union controlled a ring of more than 100 wartime spies in the United States who worked in the FBI, the Office of Strategic Services (precursor to the CIA), and the War Department (precursor to the Pentagon). The documents stem from the Verona project, a 30-year-long American effort to decode Soviet cables intercepted during and after World War II. (The New York Times, March 6)
