Russia’s prosecutor general has ordered an investigation into charges of covert funding for Boris Yeltsin’s presidential campaign. Among those to be questioned are past and present presidential aides Anatoly Chubais, Viktor Ilyushin and Aleksandr Korzhakov. (Itar-Tass, November 21) The charges arise out of last week’s publication of a transcripted conversation in which Chubais admitted that two of his aides tried to smuggle $538,000 out of the Russian government building in June. Chubais has denied the charge.
