YELTSIN APPOINTS NEW GOVERNOR IN RED BELT.

President Boris Yeltsin has appointed Aleksandr Semernev to be the new governor of the fiercely pro-Communist Bryansk region in south-western Russia, on the borders with Ukraine and Belarus. In last Sunday’s election, Gennady Zyuganov won 48 percent of votes in the region, while Yeltsin came in second with 26 percent. (Itar-Tass, June 19) The former governor, Vladimir Barabanov, was dismissed by Yeltsin in May following charges that he had mishandled state funds and was responsible for a steep fall in the region’s living standards.
