Describing Francois Mitterand as a valued supporter of democratic reforms in Russia, Boris Yeltsin paid tribute to the former French president upon his death January 8. In separate telegrams to Mitterand’s wife and successor, current president Jacques Chirac, Yeltsin claimed Mitterand was one of the outstanding politicians of his time and thanked him for "his great personal contribution in establishing and developing Russian-French accord and cooperation." Chirac’s office announced January 8 that he would travel to Moscow for an international conference on nuclear security, scheduled for April 19-20. (5)
