Publication: Monitor Volume: 2 Issue: 92

Last week, Russian Communist party leader Gennady Zyuganov proposed that he and his chief rival in next month’s election, incumbent President Boris Yeltsin, should take part in a live television debate. (Interfax, May 10) On Saturday Yeltsin rejected the proposal, saying he had enough of such "demagogy" during his thirty years as a Communist party member. Yeltsin said that if he engaged in television debates with all the presidential candidates, he would have no time to carry out his official duties. (Interfax, May 11)
