President Boris Yeltsin returned from his vacation in Sochi and met in Moscow with Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin. The two discussed a broad range of issues, including NATO expansion, Bosnia, Chechnya, and Chernomyrdin’s upcoming visit to Canada. (1)
The meeting took place in the wake of numerous reports that Yeltsin is unhappy with Chernomyrdin, had refused to meet with him while on vacation in Sochi, and was prepared to force him into retirement. (2) The Moscow meeting was probably intended to put an end to such speculation.
