Accordingto Moscow’s Echo radio on July 31, Boris Yeltsin reportedly hasissued a decree liquidating the commission on human rights attachedto his office. That body had been headed by human rights activistSergei Kovalev. The radio said that the commission’s functionswould now be performed by a department within the PresidentialAdministration for Work with Appeals by Citizens. But the reportmay be premature: Yeltsin legal aid Robert Shevelev told the radiothat no such document liquidating the commission existed but heconcluded that "today the commission exists and today onecan calm oneself about its fate, but tomorrow the commissionmay already cease to exist."
