YELTSIN’S WIFE GETS TV POST.

Naina Yeltsina, wife of the Russian president, has been appointed co-chair of the board of trustees of Russia’s new national cultural television channel, Kultura. Her responsibilities seem likely to be purely formal. According to Russian Radio, the other co-chair will be the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich. (Radio Russia, September 16) The new channel, which is to be supported by state funding rather than advertising, is being set up on the basis of the St. Petersburg 5 channel and is due to start broadcasting on November 1. It is seen as part of the Kremlin’s effort to create a new sense of Russian national identity.
