ZHIRINOVSKY CALLS FOR SANCTIONS AGAINST REPUBLICS WHICH MISTREAT RUSSIANS.

Publication: Monitor Volume: 1 Issue: 31

Russian nationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky said that Moscow must impose “tough” economic sanctions against any former Soviet republic that mistreats ethnic Russians, Sokol Zhirinovskogo (no. 7) reported. Zhirinovsky’s statement–which echoes a recent remark by Yeltsin’s citizenship advisor Abulakh Mikitayev–came in an address to the military and the military industrial complex. Zhirinovsky told these groups that Russia needs a strong army and must rearm. In another speech reported in Pravda Zhirinovskogo ( no. 3), Zhirinovsky said that he wanted to replace all ethnically-based units in the Russian Federation with non-ethnically defined ones–another idea that the Yeltsin government reportedly is considering.
