MOSCOW TO INCREASE SALE OF URANIUM FROM BOMBS TO U.S.

This year, Russia will sell to the U.S. 18 metric tons of highly enriched uranium recovered from dismantled atomic bombs, Atomic Energy Minister Viktor Mikhailov announced yesterday. This compares to 12 metric tons sold last year and 6 tons in 1995. Under a 1994 treaty, the U.S. has agreed to buy a total of 500 tons. The uranium is first diluted by Russia before it is sent to the U.S. where it will be used for fuel in power reactors. (Interfax, January 14).
